Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith

“On the evening of the . . . twenty-first of September [1823] . . . I betook myself to prayer and supplication to Almighty God . . . .

“While I was thus in the act of calling upon God, I discovered a light appearing in my room, which continued to increase until the room was lighter than at noonday, when immediately a personage appeared at my bedside, standing in the air, for his feet did not touch the floor.

“He had on a loose robe of most exquisite whiteness. It was a whiteness beyond anything earthly I had ever seen; nor do I believe that any earthly thing could be made to appear so exceedingly white and brilliant. His hands were naked, and his arms also, a little above the wrists; so, also, were his feet naked, as were his legs, a little above the ankles. His head and neck were also bare. I could discover that he had no other clothing on but this robe, as it was open, so that I could see into his bosom.

“Not only was his robe exceedingly white, but his whole person was glorious beyond description, and his countenance truly like lightning. The room was exceedingly light, but not so very bright as immediately around his person. When I first looked upon him, I was afraid; but the fear soon left me.

“He called me by name, and said unto me that he was a messenger sent from the presence of God to me, and that his name was Moroni; that God had a work for me to do; and that my name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people.
“He said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fulness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants;

“Also, that there were two stones in silver bows—and these stones, fastened to a breastplate, constituted what is called the Urim and Thummim—deposited with the plates; and the possession and use of these stones were what constituted Seers in ancient or former times; and that God had prepared them for the purpose of translating the book.

“Again, he told me, that when I got those plates of which he had spoken—for the time that they should be obtained was not yet fulfilled—I should not show them to any person; neither the breastplate with the Urim and Thummim; only to those to whom I should be commanded to show them; if I did I should be destroyed. While he was conversing with me about the plates, the vision was opened to my mind that I could see the place where the plates were deposited, and that so clearly and distinctly that I knew the place again when I visited it.

“After this communication, I saw the light in the room begin to gather immediately around the person of him who had been speaking to me, and it continued to do so, until the room was again left dark, except just around him, when instantly I saw, as it were, a conduit open right up into heaven, and he ascended until he entirely disappeared, and the room was left as it had been before this heavenly light had made its appearance.

“I lay musing on the singularity of the scene, and marveling greatly at what had been told to me by this extraordinary messenger; when, in the midst of my meditation, I suddenly discovered that my room was again beginning to get lighted, and in an instant, as it were, the same heavenly messenger was again by my bedside.

“He commenced, and again related the very same things which he had done at his first visit, without the least variation; which having done, he informed me of great judgments which were coming upon the earth, with great desolations by famine, sword, and pestilence; and that these grievous judgments would come on the earth in this generation. Having related these things, he again ascended as he had done before.

“By this time, so deep were the impressions made on my mind, that sleep had fled from my eyes, and I lay overwhelmed in astonishment at what I had both seen and heard. But what was my surprise when again I beheld the same messenger at my bedside, and heard him rehearse or repeat over again to me the same things as before; and added a caution to me, telling me that Satan would try to tempt me (in consequence of the indigent circumstances of my father’s family), to get the plates for the purpose of getting rich. This he forbade me, saying that I must have no other object in view in getting the plates but to glorify God, and must not be influenced by any other motive than that of building His kingdom; otherwise I could not get them.

“After this third visit, he again ascended into heaven as before, and I was again left to ponder on the strangeness of what I had just experienced; when almost immediately after the heavenly messenger had ascended from me the third time, the cock crowed, and I found that day was approaching, so that our interviews must have occupied the whole of that night.

“I shortly after arose from my bed, and, as usual, went to the necessary labors of the day; but, in attempting to work as at other times, I found my strength so exhausted as to render me entirely unable. My father, who was laboring along with me, discovered something to be wrong with me, and told me to go home. I started with the intention of going to the house; but, in attempting to cross the fence out of the field where we were, my strength entirely failed me, and I fell helpless on the ground, and for a time was quite unconscious of anything.

“The first thing that I can recollect was a voice speaking unto me, calling me by name. I looked up, and beheld the same messenger standing over my head, surrounded by light as before. He then again related unto me all that he had related to me the previous night, and commanded me to go to my father and tell him of the vision and commandments which I had received.

“I obeyed; I returned to my father in the field, and rehearsed the whole matter to him. He replied to me that it was of God, and told me to go and do as commanded by the messenger. I left the field, and went to the place where the messenger had told me the plates were deposited; and owing to the distinctness of the vision which I had had concerning it, I knew the place the instant that I arrived there.

“Convenient to the village of Manchester, Ontario county, New York, stands a hill of considerable size, and the most elevated of any in the neighborhood. On the west side of this hill, not far from the top, under a stone of considerable size, lay the plates, deposited in a stone box. This stone was thick and rounding in the middle on the upper side, and thinner towards the edges, so that the middle part of it was visible above the ground, but the edge all around was covered with earth.

“Having removed the earth, I obtained a lever, which I got fixed under the edge of the stone, and with a little exertion raised it up. I looked in, and there indeed did I behold the plates, the Urim and Thummim, and the breastplate, as stated by the messenger. The box in which they lay was formed by laying stones together in some kind of cement. In the bottom of the box were laid two stones crossways of the box, and on these stones lay the plates and the other things with them.

“I made an attempt to take them out, but was forbidden by the messenger, and was again informed that the time for bringing them forth had not yet arrived, neither would it, until four years from that time; but he told me that I should come to that place precisely in one year from that time, and that he would there meet with me, and that I should continue to do so until the time should come for obtaining the plates.

“Accordingly, as I had been commanded, I went at the end of each year, and at each time I found the same messenger there, and received instruction and intelligence from him at each of our interviews, respecting what the Lord was going to do, and how and in what manner His kingdom was to be conducted in the last days.


“At length the time arrived for obtaining the plates, the Urim and Thummim, and the breastplate. On the twenty-second day of September, one thousand eight hundred and twenty-seven, having gone as usual at the end of another year to the place where they were deposited, the same heavenly messenger delivered them up to me with this charge: That I should be responsible for them; that if I should let them go carelessly, or through any neglect of mine, I should be cut off; but that if I would use all my endeavors to preserve them, until he, the messenger, should call for them, they should be protected.

“I soon found out the reason why I had received such strict charges to keep them safe, and why it was that the messenger had said that when I had done what was required at my hand, he would call for them. For no sooner was it known that I had them, than the most strenuous exertions were used to get them from me. Every stratagem that could be invented was resorted to for that purpose. The persecution became more bitter and severe than before, and multitudes were on the alert continually to get them from me if possible. But by the wisdom of God, they remained safe in my hands, until I had accomplished by them what was required at my hand. When, according to arrangements, the messenger called for them, I delivered them up to him; and he has them in his charge until this day, being the second day of May, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight.”



The ancient record thus brought forth from the earth as the voice of a people speaking from the dust, and translated into modern speech by the gift and power of God as attested by Divine affirmation, was first published to the world in the year 1830 as The Book of Mormon.

Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That Joseph Smith, Jun., the translator of this work, has shown unto us the plates of which hath been spoken, which have the appearance of gold; and as many of the leaves as the said Smith has translated we did handle with our hands; and we also saw the engravings thereon, all of which has the appearance of ancient work, and of curious workmanship. And this we bear record with words of soberness, that the said Smith has shown unto us, for we have seen and hefted, and know of a surety that the said Smith has got the plates of which we have spoken. Testimony of the Three Witnesses

Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment-seat of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen.

Einleitung des Buches Mormon

Das Buch Mormon ist ein Band heiliger Schrift, der Bibel vergleichbar. Es ist ein Bericht über Gottes Umgang mit den alten Bewohnern Amerikas und enthält die Fülle des immerwährenden Evangeliums.

Das Buch wurde von vielen alten Propheten durch den Geist der Prophezeiung und Offenbarung geschrieben. Ihre auf Goldplatten geschriebenen Worte wurden von einem Propheten/Geschichtsschreiber namens Mormon zitiert und gekürzt. Die Aufzeichnungen geben Bericht von zwei großen Völkern. Eines kam 600 v. Chr. von Jerusalem und spaltete sich später in zwei Nationen, bekannt als die Nephiten und die Lamaniten. Das andere kam viel früher, als der Herr die Sprachen beim Turm zu Babel verwirrte. Diese Gruppe ist als die Jarediten bekannt. Nach mehreren tausend Jahren waren alle zerschlagen außer den Lamaniten; und diese sind die Hauptvorfahren der amerikanischen Indianer.

Das krönende Ereignis, von dem das Buch Mormon berichtet, ist das persönliche geistliche Wirken des Herrn Jesus Christus unter den Nephiten kurz nach seiner Auferstehung. Es legt die Lehren des Evangeliums dar, umreißt den Plan der Errettung und erklärt den Menschen, was sie tun müssen, um Frieden in diesem Leben zu erlangen und ewige Errettung im kommenden Leben.

Nachdem Mormon seine Schriften beendet hatte, übergab er den Bericht an seinen Sohn Moroni, der einige eigene Worte hinzufügte und die Platten im Hügel Cumorah verbarg. Am 21. September 1823 erschien derselbe Moroni als verherrlichtes, auferstandenes Wesen dem Propheten Joseph Smith und unterwies ihn bezüglich des alten Berichts und dessen vorgesehener Übersetzung in die englische Sprache.

Schließlich wurden die Platten Joseph Smith übergeben, der sie durch die Gabe und Macht Gottes übersetzte. Der Bericht ist heute in vielen Sprachen veröffentlicht als ein neuer und weiterer Zeuge dafür, daß Jesus Christus der Sohn des lebendigen Gottes ist und daß alle, die zu ihm kommen und den Gesetzen und Verordnungen seines Evangeliums gehorchen wollen, errettet werden können.

In bezug auf diesen Bericht hat der Prophet Joseph Smith gesagt: „Ich habe den Brüdern gesagt, das Buch Mormon sei das richtigste aller Bücher auf Erden und der Schlußstein unserer Religion und wenn man sich an dessen Weisungen halte, werde man dadurch näher zu Gott kommen als durch jedes andere Buch.“

Außer Joseph Smith gewährte der Herr elf anderen, die Goldplatten selbst zu sehen und besondere Zeugen für die Wahrheit und Göttlichkeit des Buches Mormon zu sein. Ihr schriftliches Zeugnis ist hier enthalten als „Das Zeugnis von drei Zeugen“ und „Das Zeugnis von acht Zeugen“.

Wir laden alle Menschen überall ein, das Buch Mormon zu lesen, in ihrem Herzen über die darin enthaltene Botschaft nachzudenken und dann Gott, den Ewigen Vater, im Namen Christi zu fragen, ob das Buch wahr ist. Wer dies tut und im Glauben fragt, wird durch die Macht des Heiligen Geistes ein Zeugnis von dessen Wahrheit und Göttlichkeit erlangen. (Siehe Moroni 10:3–5.)

Wer dieses Zeugnis von Gott durch den Heiligen Geist erlangt, wird durch dieselbe Macht auch erkennen, daß Jesus Christus der Erretter der Welt ist, daß Joseph Smith in diesen letzten Tagen sein Offenbarer und Prophet ist und daß die Kirche Jesu Christi der Heiligen der Letzten Tage das Reich des Herrn ist, welches wieder auf Erden errichtet wurde in Vorbereitung auf das Zweite Kommen des Messias.

Introduction to the Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as does the Bible, the fulness of the everlasting gospel.

The book was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation. Their words, written on gold plates, were quoted and abridged by a prophet-historian named Mormon. The record gives an account of two great civilizations. One came from Jerusalem in 600 B.C., and afterward separated into two nations, known as the Nephites and the Lamanites. The other came much earlier when the Lord confounded the tongues at the Tower of Babel. This group is known as the Jaredites. After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are among the ancestors of the American Indians.

The crowning event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ among the Nephites soon after his resurrection. It puts forth the doctrines of the gospel, outlines the plan of salvation, and tells men what they must do to gain peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come.

After Mormon completed his writings, he delivered the account to his son Moroni, who added a few words of his own and hid up the plates in the hill Cumorah. On September 21, 1823, the same Moroni, then a glorified, resurrected being, appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and instructed him relative to the ancient record and its destined translation into the English language.

In due course the plates were delivered to Joseph Smith, who translated them by the gift and power of God. The record is now published in many languages as a new and additional witness that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that all who will come unto him and obey the laws and ordinances of his gospel may be saved.
Concerning this record the Prophet Joseph Smith said: “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”

In addition to Joseph Smith, the Lord provided for eleven others to see the gold plates for themselves and to be special witnesses of the truth and divinity of the Book of Mormon. Their written testimonies are included herewith as “The Testimony of Three Witnesses” and “The Testimony of Eight Witnesses.”

We invite all men everywhere to read the Book of Mormon, to ponder in their hearts the message it contains, and then to ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ if the book is true. Those who pursue this course and ask in faith will gain a testimony of its truth and divinity by the power of the Holy Ghost. (See Moroni 10: 3-5.)

Those who gain this divine witness from the Holy Spirit will also come to know by the same power that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, that Joseph Smith is his revelator and prophet in these last days, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord’s kingdom once again established on the earth, preparatory to the second coming of the Messiah.

Wenn man wissen möchte, dass das Buch Mormon wahr ist, muss man es lesen und darüber nachsinnen und beten. Wer aufrichtig nach der Wahrheit sucht, wird bald spüren, dass das Buch Mormon das Wort Gottes ist.

Für eine nachhaltige Bekehrung ist es wichtig, dass man das Buch Mormon liest und dar↔ber nachsinnt und betet. Wenn jemand zum ersten Mal im Buch Mormon liest, unternimmt er einen wichtigen Schritt. So kann er nämlich erkennen, dass Joseph Smith ein Prophet Gottest ist und dass die wahre Kirche auf der Erde wiederhergestellt worden ist.

Ich habe für mich selbst herausgefunden, dass das Buch Mormon das Wort Gottes ist, weil ich es persönlich gelesen und darüber gebetet habe. Es hilft mir, dir Lehren Jesu Christi besser zu verstehen und die Dinge, die die meisten Religionen misverstanden und falsch interpretiert haben, zu erklären. Weil ich weiß, daß das Buch Mormon wahr ist, weiß ich auch, daß Joseph Smith wirklich ein Prophet Gottes war, und daß die Kirche Jesu Christ in diesen letzten Tage wiedergestellt worden ist. Weil ich weiß, dass ich das für mich selbst herausfinden konnte, weiß ich, daß jeder, der das Buch Mormon ernsthaft studiert und darüber betet, auch erkennen wird, daß es wahr ist.

July Theme - The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ

With the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ also came the dispelling of false or misinterpreted doctrine. Our Heavenly Father, knowing that the aforementioned apostacy would bring about with it a corruption of true teachings, commanded other people from other parts of the world to record their prophecies in their own language, knowing that these writings would be translated and used to correct false doctrine and stand as further witness of Jesus Christ and his mission. One such compilation of these teachings is found in the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. It was translated by Joseph Smith through the power of God, and is evidence that Joseph Smith is a true prophet of God.

The Book of Mormon was written by ancient prophets who lived between 600 B.C. and 400 A.D. in Ancient America. These prophets wrote down their prophecies concerning the coming of Jesus Christ, as well as the history of their people. A great prophet by the name of Mormon took all of these prophecies and abridged them into one book. When Christ was resurrected, he appeared personally to the people who were living there at that time, and revealed his Gospel to them, just as he revealed his Gospel to the Jews in Jerusalem (3 Nephi 11 - 28). However, after many years of peace (4 Nephi), the people began to become wicked again. Eventually, all of the righteous people were destroyed by those who were wicked. Mormon's son, Moroni, the last prophet to live at that time, finished recording his prophecies and the history of his people, and buried them deep in the earth.

Centuries later, that same Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith as a resurrected being, and showed him where he had buried the record he and his father made, and gave him further light and knowledge. When the time was right, Joseph Smith translated the record by the Power of God from the language of Moroni's people to English. This is how the Book of Mormon came to be.

In order to know that the Book of Mormon is true, a person must read, ponder, and pray about it. The honest seeker of truth will soon come to feel that the Book of Mormon is true.

Reading, pondering, and praying about the Book of Mormon are critical for an enduring conversion. Those who begin reading the Bookf of Mormon for the first time take important steps toward coming to know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God and that the true Church has been restored to the earth.

Having studied the Book of Mormon and prayed about it myself, I have come to know for myself that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. It helps me to understand the teachings of Jesus Christ better, and helps clear up many things that most other religions have misunderstood or misinterpreted. Because I know that the Book of Mormon is true, I know that Joseph Smith was indeed a prophet of God, and that the Church of Jesus Christ has been restored in these latter days. Because I know that I have been able to find this out for myself, I know that anyone who earnestly studies the Book of Mormon and prays about it will also come to know that it is true.

Nach den vielen Jahren des Abfalls vom Glauben und der Suche der Menschheit nach Wahrheit und Licht, hatte unser Vater im Himmel uns seine Liebe wieder gezeigt, und gab die Wahrheit wieder auf Erden kund. Das tat er im Jahr 1820, als ein 14-jähriger Knabe, der selbst auf der Suche nach Wahrheit war, fasste Mut und fragte Gott, wo die Wahrheit zu finden sei. Dieser 14-jähriger Knabe hieß Joseph Smith. Darunten ist seine Geschichte, mit seinen eigenen Worten...

Ich wurde im Jahre unseres Herrn eintausendachthundertundfünf geboren, am dreiundzwanzigsten Tag im Dezember, in der Ortschaft Sharon, Kreis Windsor, Staat Vermont ... Mein Vater, bJoseph Smith sen., zog aus dem Staate Vermont weg und übersiedelte nach Palmyra, Kreis Ontario (jetzt Wayne) im Staate New York, als ich etwa in meinem zehnten Lebensjahr stand. Rund vier Jahre nachdem mein Vater nach Palmyra gekommen war, übersiedelte er mit seiner Familie nach Manchester im selben Kreis Ontario—
seine Familie bestand aus elf Seelen, nämlich meinem Vater aJoseph Smith, meiner bMutter Lucy Smith (vor ihrer Heirat hieß sie Mack, Tochter des Solomon Mack), meinen Brüdern cAlvin (der am 19. November 1823 in seinem sechsundzwanzigsten Lebensjahr starb), dHyrum, mir selbst, eSamuel Harrison, William und Don Carlos sowie meinen Schwestern Sophronia, Catherine und Lucy.

Im Laufe des zweiten Jahres nach unserer Übersiedlung nach Manchester kam es an unserem Wohnort zu einer ungewöhnlichen Erregung über das Thema Religion. Sie begann bei den Methodisten, breitete sich aber bald unter allen Glaubensgemeinschaften in jener Gegend des Landes aus. Es hatte tatsächlich den Anschein, als sei der ganze Landesteil davon ergriffen, und ganze Scharen schlossen sich den verschiedenen religiösen Parteien an, was nicht wenig Aufregung und Uneinigkeit unter den Leuten verursachte, denn einige schrien: „Siehe hier!“, und andere: „Siehe dort!“ Einige stritten für den Methodistenglauben, andere für den der Presbyterianer, wieder andere für den der Baptisten.

Denn wohl bekundeten diejenigen, die sich zu den verschiedenen Glaubensrichtungen bekehrt hatten, zur Zeit ihrer Bekehrung große Liebe, und die betreffenden Geistlichen, die dieses außergewöhnliche Schauspiel religiöser Aufwallung in Szene gesetzt hatten und förderten, zeigten großen Eifer, um jedermann sich bekehren zu lassen, wie sie das zu nennen beliebten, und jeder möge sich der Gemeinschaft anschließen, die ihm zusagte; wenn dann aber die Bekehrten einer nach dem anderen weggingen, die einen zu der einen Partei, die anderen zu einer anderen, da konnte man sehen, daß die scheinbar so guten Gefühle der Priester und auch der Bekehrten mehr vorgetäuscht als wirklich waren; denn es kam zu einer großen Verwirrung und zu bösen Gefühlen—Priester eiferte gegen Priester, Bekehrter gegen Bekehrten, so daß all ihr Wohlwollen füreinander, sofern sie je welches gehabt hatten, in dem Wortkrieg und aMeinungsstreit gänzlich unterging.

Ich stand damals in meinem fünfzehnten Lebensjahr. Meines Vaters Familie ließ sich für den Glauben der Presbyterianer gewinnen, und ihrer vier schlossen sich dieser Kirche an, nämlich meine Mutter Lucy, meine Brüder Hyrum und Samuel Harrison sowie meine Schwester Sophronia.

In dieser Zeit großer Erregung wurde mein Sinn von ernstem Nachdenken und innerer Unruhe bewegt; zwar nahm ich lebhaften Anteil und hatte sehr ausgeprägte Gefühle, aber ich hielt mich doch von allen diesen Parteien fern, wenn ich auch ihre verschiedenen Versammlungen besuchte, sooft sich mir die Gelegenheit bot...so groß waren die Verwirrung und der Streit zwischen den verschiedenen Konfessionen, daß es für einen jungen Menschen wie mich, der mit Menschen und Dingen wenig Erfahrung hatte, gar nicht möglich war, mit Sicherheit zu entscheiden, wer nun recht und wer unrecht hatte... Bisweilen befand sich mein Sinn in heftiger Erregung, so groß war das Geschrei, so unaufhörlich der Tumult...

... Inmitten dieses Wortkriegs und Tumults der Meinungen sagte ich mir oft: Was ist da zu tun? Welche von allen diesen Parteien hat arecht, oder haben sie allesamt unrecht? Falls eine von ihnen recht hat, welche ist es, und wie soll ich sie erkennen?

Während ich also mit diesen äußersten Schwierigkeiten zu kämpfen hatte, die durch den Glaubensstreit dieser Religionsparteien ausgelöst worden waren, las ich eines Tages im Jakobusbrief den fünften Vers im ersten Kapitel, der lautet: Fehlt es aber einem von euch an Weisheit, so erbitte er sie von Gott, der allen gern gibt und keine Vorwürfe macht; dann wird sie ihm gegeben werden.



Nie ist einem Menschen eine Schriftstelle mit mehr Macht ins Herz gedrungen als diese damals mir. Es war so, als ergieße sie sich mit großer Stärke in jede Regung meines Herzens. Wieder und wieder dachte ich darüber nach, denn ich wußte, wenn überhaupt jemand Weisheit von Gott brauchte, so war ich es; denn wie ich mich verhalten sollte, wußte ich nicht, und solange ich nicht mehr Weisheit erlangte, als ich damals besaß, würde ich es auch nie wissen; denn die Religionslehrer der verschiedenen Glaubensgemeinschaften averstanden ein und dieselbe Schriftstelle so unterschiedlich, daß dadurch alles Vertrauen darauf zerstört wurde, die Frage durch Berufung auf die bBibel zu entscheiden.

Endlich kam ich zu dem Schluß, daß ich entweder in Finsternis und Verwirrung bleiben müsse oder daß ich das tun müsse, was Jakobus sagt, nämlich Gott bitten. Ich faßte also endlich den Entschluß, aGott zu bitten, denn ich sagte mir: Wenn er denen Weisheit gibt, denen es an Weisheit fehlt, und wenn er gern gibt und keine Vorwürfe macht, dann durfte ich es wohl wagen.

Also zog ich mich gemäß diesem meinem Entschluß, Gott zu bitten, in den Wald zurück, um den Versuch zu machen. Es war an einem strahlend schönen Morgen in den ersten Frühlingstagen achtzehnhundertundzwanzig. Zum erstenmal in meinem Leben unternahm ich so einen Versuch, denn bei all meiner Unruhe hatte ich doch noch nie versucht, laut zu beten.


Nachdem ich mich an den Ort zurückgezogen hatte, den ich vorher dazu ausersehen hatte, und mich umblickte und sah, daß ich allein war, kniete ich nieder und fing an, Gott die Wünsche meines Herzens vorzutragen. Kaum hatte ich das getan, wurde ich sogleich von einer Macht gepackt, die mich gänzlich überwältigte und eine so erstaunliche Wirkung auf mich hatte, daß sie mir die Zunge lähmte und ich nicht sprechen konnte. Dichte Finsternis zog sich um mich zusammen, und ich hatte eine Zeitlang das Gefühl, als sei ich plötzlicher Vernichtung anheimgegeben. Ich nahm aber alle Kraft zusammen und rief Gott an, er möge mich aus der Macht dieses Feindes befreien, der mich gepackt hatte; und gerade in dem Augenblick, wo ich in Verzweiflung versinken und mich der Vernichtung preisgeben wollte—und nicht etwa einem eingebildeten Verderben, sondern der Macht eines wirklichen Wesens aus der Welt des Unsichtbaren, das eine so unglaubliche Macht hatte, wie ich sie nie zuvor bei irgendeinem Wesen verspürt hatte—eben in diesem Augenblick höchster Angst sah ich gerade über meinem Haupt, bheller als das Licht der Sonne, eine Säule aus cLicht, die allmählich herabkam, bis sie auf mich fiel.

Kaum war sie erschienen, da fand ich mich auch schon von dem Feind befreit, der mich gebunden gehalten hatte. Als das Licht auf mir ruhte, sah ich zwei Personen von unbeschreiblicher Helle und Herrlichkeit über mir in der Luft stehen. Eine von ihnen redete mich an, nannte mich beim Namen und sagte, dabei auf die andere deutend: Dies ist mein geliebter Sohn. Ihn höre!



Der Grund, warum ich den Herrn befragen wollte, war der, daß ich wissen wollte, welche von allen Glaubensgemeinschaften recht hätte, damit ich wisse, welcher ich mich anschließen sollte. Sobald ich mich soweit gefaßt hatte, daß ich imstande war zu sprechen, fragte ich daher die über mir im Licht stehenden Personen, welche von allen Glaubensgemeinschaften die richtige sei...

...Ich bekam die Antwort, ich dürfe mich keiner von ihnen anschließen, denn sie seien alle im Unrecht; und die Person, die zu mir sprach, sagte, ihre sämtlichen Glaubensbekenntnisse seien in seinen Augen ein Greuel; jene Glaubensbekenner seien alle verderbt, denn „sie nahen sich mir mit den Lippen, aber ihr Herz ist ferne von mir; sie verkünden Menschengebote als Lehre, sie haben zwar eine Form der Gottesfurcht, aber sie leugnen deren Macht“.

Nochmals verbot er mir, mich einer von ihnen anzuschließen; und noch vieles andere sagte er mir...Als ich wieder zu mir kam, fand ich mich auf dem Rücken liegen, den Blick zum Himmel gerichtet.

Weil ein 14-jähriger Jung den Mut hatte, Gott (statt des Menschen) zu vertrauen, wurde die Wahrheit wieder auf Erden kundgemacht. Weil ein 14-jährige Jung den Mut hatte, Gott zu bitten, wurde ein Prophet berufen und auserwählt, um die Wiederherstellung des Evangeliums zu vollbringen. Durch Joseph Smith konnte der Herr die Kirche Jesu Christi wieder auf Erden errichten. Ich weiß daß das alles wahr ist. Ich weiß das, weil ich selbst Gott gefragt habe, und ich habe die Antwort bekommen, daß das wahr ist. Ich weiß, das jeder, der demütig nach der Warhheit sucht, das für sich selbst erkennen kann, wenn er auch Gott fragt.

June: The Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the Prophet, Joseph Smith

After years of apostasy and mankind's longing for light and truth, our Heavenly Father extended his love again to us, and revealed his truth on the earth once more. This he did in the year 1820, when a 14-year old boy, who was on the search for truth himself, had the courage to ask God where truth was to be found. That 14-year old boy was Joseph Smith. This is his story, told in his own words....

I was born in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five, on the twenty-third day of December, in the town of Sharon, Windsor county, State of Vermont . . . My father, Joseph Smith, Sen., left the State of Vermont, and moved to Palmyra, Ontario (now Wayne) county, in the State of New York, when I was in my tenth year, or thereabouts. In about four years after my father’s arrival in Palmyra, he moved with his family into Manchester in the same county of Ontario—
His family consisting of eleven souls, namely, my father, Joseph Smith; my amother, Lucy Smith (whose name, previous to her marriage, was Mack, daughter of Solomon Mack); my brothers, Alvin (who died November 19th, 1823, in the 26th year of his age), Hyrum, myself, Samuel Harrison, William, Don Carlos; and my sisters, Sophronia, Catherine, and Lucy.

Some time in the second year after our removal to Manchester, there was in the place where we lived an unusual excitement on the subject of religion. It commenced with the Methodists, but soon became general among all the sects in that region of country. Indeed, the whole district of country seemed affected by it, and great multitudes united themselves to the different religious parties, which created no small stir and division amongst the people, some crying, “Lo, here!” and others, “Lo, there!” Some were contending for the Methodist faith, some for the Presbyterian, and some for the Baptist.

For, notwithstanding the great alove which the converts to these different faiths expressed at the time of their conversion, and the great zeal manifested by the respective clergy, who were active in getting up and promoting this extraordinary scene of religious feeling, in order to have everybody converted, as they were pleased to call it, let them join what sect they pleased; yet when the converts began to file off, some to one party and some to another, it was seen that the seemingly good feelings of both the priests and the converts were more pretended than real; for a scene of great confusion and bad feeling ensued—priest contending against priest, and convert against convert; so that all their good feelings one for another, if they ever had any, were entirely lost in a strife of words and a contest about opinions.

I was at this time in my fifteenth year. My father’s family was proselyted to the Presbyterian faith, and four of them joined that church, namely, my mother, Lucy; my brothers Hyrum and Samuel Harrison; and my sister Sophronia.

During this time of great excitement my mind was called up to serious reflection and great uneasiness; but though my feelings were deep and often poignant, still I kept myself aloof from all these parties, though I attended their several meetings as often as occasion would permit...so great were the confusion and strife among the different denominations,... it was impossible for a person young as I was, and so unacquainted with men and things, to come to any certain conclusion who was bright and who was wrong...

... In the midst of this war of words and tumult of opinions, I often said to myself: What is to be done? Who of all these parties are right; or, are they all wrong together? If any one of them be aright, which is it, and how shall I know it?

While I was laboring under the extreme difficulties caused by the contests of these parties of religionists, I was one day reading the Epistle of James, first chapter and fifth verse, which reads: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.



Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed bwisdom from God, I did; for how to act I did not know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would never know; for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible.

At length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in adarkness and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God. I at length came to the determination to “ask of God,” concluding that if he gave wisdom to them that lacked wisdom, and would give liberally, and not upbraid, I might venture...

...I retired to the woods to make the attempt. It was on the morning of a beautiful, clear day, early in the spring of eighteen hundred and twenty. It was the first time in my life that I had made such an attempt, for amidst all my anxieties I had never as yet made the attempt to pray vocally.

After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was aseized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick bdarkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction.
But, exerting all my powers to acall upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into bdespair and abandon myself to destruction—not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being—just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.


It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!



My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right...

...I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all ccorrupt; that: “they ddraw near to me with their lips, but their ehearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”

He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me... When I came to myself again, I found myself alying on my back, looking up into heaven.

Because a 14-year old boy had to courage to trust God more than man, truth was revealed to the Earth once more. Because a 14-year old boy had the courage to ask God, a prophet was called and set apart to bring about the restoration of the Gospel. Through Joseph Smith, the Lord was able to establish the Church of Jesus Christ on the earth once again. I know this to be true. I know this because I have asked God myself whether or not this has happened, and I have received the answer that it is true. I know that any humble seeker of truth can know this for themselves, if they too ask of God.
